Compromise of 1850
This is a poem about the Compromise of 1850. I hope it will be a good study tool.
Compromise
of 1850
In the year 1850, California
wanted to be,
A
state that was without slavery,
So
in order to not upset power,
A
compromise was made by Henry Clay, the senator,
He
said that California would be a state that was free,
And
slave trade was banned from Washington D.C.,
The
compromise also said there needed to be a law for Fugitive Slaves that was
stronger,
So
they debated for 7 months before someone concurred,
Calhoun
of South Carolina was against the compromise to protect slavery,
Webster of Massachusetts was for the compromise
because there was land not good for cotton in the territories.
